Command Sergeant Major

Command Sergeant Major Ricky L. Dean was born in Rochester, N.Y., on April 30, 1963. He attended Basic Training in December 1983 at Fort Jackson, S.C., and after graduating from Basic Training, he attended Medical Specialist Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

His first duty station was 1-64 Armor Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Kitzingen, Germany from 1984 until 1987. He served as the Company Medic for Delta Co., 1-64 AR, and before his three-year tour was over, he pinned on Corporal and became the Senior Medic for the company. He was then assigned to 1-14 Field Artillery Battalion, Fort Stewart, Ga., from 1987 to 1990. He was an Assistant Squad Leader and Treatment NCO. He was promoted to Sergeant and became the Treatment NCO before leaving for Germany in January 1990, where he was assigned to 2-15 Infantry Battalion, 3rd ID, Schweinfurt, Germany until 1995. During this five-year tour, he served as Squad Leader, Treatment NCO and Platoon Sergeant and advanced from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant promotable.

He also served a six-month deployment to Macedonia as Platoon Sergeant. From 1995 to 1998, he served with the San Antonio Recruiting Battalion. During this three-year tour, he was promoted to Sergeant First Class. Dean volunteered to go to Korea from 1998 until 1999, where he was assigned to the 2nd Forward Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division as Treatment Platoon Sergeant for Charlie Company, 2nd Forward Support Battalion. After his one-year tour in Korea, he was assigned to 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash., from 1999 to 2006. During this period, he served as Medical Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant for HHC, 1-23rd Infantry Battalion. During the transition period to the Army’s First Stryker Brigade, he served as First Sergeant for Charlie Company, 296 BSB, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

He deployed to Iraq from November 2003 until November 2004. From 2005 to 2006, CSM Dean became the Operations Sergeant for 296 BSB before attending the Sergeants Major Academy from August 2006 to May 2007. After graduating from the Sergeants Major Academy, he served as the Troop Sergeant Major for William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Fort Bliss, Texas, from 2007 until 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he was assigned as the CSM for the Medical Department Activity at Fort Polk, La. CSM Dean was then assigned as the Troop Command Sergeant Major, Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, Ga., in June 2010. Dean was assigned as CSM, DDEAMC, Fort Gordon, Ga., on May 11, 2012.

Command Sergeant Major Dean’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal (6th Award), Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), Combat Medical Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Recruiter Badge. He is also a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.

Command Sergeant Major Dean is a graduate of the Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, First Sergeant Course and the Sergeants Major Course.
